About Black Boys in Tech

Black Boys in Tech is a workforce development organization that specializes in preparing and placing diverse STEM talent. Our pipeline begins in 1st grade with building early STEM literacy skills and ends after members are placed at their first professional position after high school. In addition to our menu Courses and Tech Camps, we offer four age-appropriate programs that are available at a number of school or community sites.

Job Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled young adults to lead one of BBIT’s in-school Tech Club during the Spring semester. The ideal candidate is a college undergraduate or graduate student with a passion for STEM education and desire to work with youth. As a facilitator, you will deliver fun and engaging STEM activities to a group of 15-20 students-- either elementary or high school, depending on your interest. Lesson plans, materials, and supplies will be provided for you, in addition to training for the role.

Back Ground and Experiences

  • Educational Background: Currently pursuing (or already have obtained) an undergraduate or graduate degree. All majors are welcome to apply. Technical and Art Majors are preferred (e.g., Engineering, IT, Design, Art, Architecture ).

  • STEM Experience: Proficient knowledge and understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics is preferred along with experience working with STEM kits, craft kits, or online coding platforms. If the candidate does not have strong STEM experience, they should have the desire to be trained on the BBIT STEM curriculum and demonstrate the ability to work well with STEM projects.

  • Teaching or Tutoring Experience: Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring kids is highly desirable. Patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible manner are essential.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to both students and adults.

  • Child Safety: Be able to pass a local and federal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

Availability:  This is a part-time position with afterschool hours, typically between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, depending on the school's schedule and club activities.  Or during the day between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM (high school site only). The ideal candidate should be able to work at least two days per week, either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday.

Transportation: Our Tech Clubs are dispersed around Dayton Ohio. Sites are approx. 15-30 minutes driving distance from UD, Wright State, and Centrate State. The ideal candidate should have a reliable source of transportation to get to and from site.

Technical Experience (HS only): If you would like to work in our high school during the day (between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM), we would prefer that you have one of the following skills:

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

  • Graphic Design

  • 3D Prining

  • Experience with large printers (such as plotter printers)

Responsibilities

  • Prework: Familiarize yourself with Black Boys in Tech curriculum and lesson plans associated with the program you are facilitating.

  • Class Facilitation: Lead interactive and dynamic classes to engage kids in the learning process. Utilize various teaching methods, such as hands-on projects, group activities, and discussions, to enhance understanding and retention.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Monitor student involvement and progress by tracking attendance, providing grades and constructive feedback, and conducting pre- and post-assessments. Administer program evaluations at the end of the course.

  • Child Safety Awareness: Prioritize the safety and well-being of students during all activities. Ensure that proper safety measures are in place, and provide guidance on safe handling of materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Other Tasks: Implement other tasks as assigned by the BBIT Site Coordinator.
